About
毘沙門堂 is a Tendai sect temple founded in 703 under the imperial decree of Emperor Monmu. Originally named 'Izumo-ji' and located near the Izumo Bridge in Kyoto, it was later renamed 'Bishamon-do'. The temple was rebuilt in 1665 in its current location in Yamashina after enduring wars and fires, with significant contributions from the monk Tenkai and his disciple Kōkai.
